The arch of the foot is supported by a band of fibrous tissue (the plantar fasciitis) linking the forefoot to the toes. When the fascia undergoes an excessive strain, micro tears occur, causing an inflammation. This is generally observed by a heel pain when getting up in the morning or after a period of inactivity. That is what we call the plantar fasciitis.
However, the heel spur is an excrescence in the heel area which is revealed by radiography. Without necessarily being associated with a particular pain, it is common to observe a heel spur by radiography.
Several factors may cause a plantar fasciitis :
- the foot type (flat or hollow)
- a change in your activities, work or even if you are wearing new shoes
- a recent weight gain
- if you are learning a new sport
By an appropriate clinical examination, your podiatrist can determine the causes of these pains and thus, establish an individualized treatment plan.
The first-line treatment consist of:
- avoid walking barefoot
- wearing appropriate shoes
- treating inflammation (ice, stretchings, laser, bandage, anti-inflammatories, cortisone, etc.)
To support the arch of the foot and liberate the fascia, the prescription of a customized foot orthosis can be the preferred treatment.
Recovering from a plantar fasciitis may be long. In order to resume promptly your activities without pain in the feet, see your podiatrist immediately!
