What education and training are required to become a podiatrist?

Share

February 19, 2018

First, we must know that « the podiatrist is a healthcare professional governed by the Professional Code of Quebec, the Podiatry Act and the Code of ethics of podiatrists.  He assesses and treats foot disorders that are not diseases of the system by medical, chemical, pharmaceutical, surgical, mechanical means or manipulations .[1] »

In 2015, Dr Brien obtained a Doctorate of Podiatric Medicine from the Université du Québec of Trois-Rivières.  Spread over 4 years, this program of studies can be compared to the training of a dentist.

The first two years of Alexandre’s training were based on theory, involving laboratory exercises and classes of biomedical sciences, anatomy, physiology, microbiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, pathology and biomechanics.

Throughout the third and the fourth year, Dr Brien focused on the clinical training by approaching the assessment of the patient, therapies, surgeries, anesthesia and podiatric inherent treatments.

Following his 4 years at the university, Alexandre enriched his knowledge by a four-month training at the reknowned  New York College of Podiatric Medecine.  Throughout his academic studies, Dr Brien earned the university scholarship for clinical excellence in podiatry.

Besides his studies at the Université du Québec of Trois-Rivières, Alexandre has completed a Bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy at the Université de Montréal as well as a year of university studies in kinesiology. Through his academic background, he has also achieved  « Level 1 and 2 – lower limbs – Taping neuro-proprioceptive. »

His academic background, paired with his clinical experience and his interest in the world of musculoskeletal, make him a meticulous and versatile podiatrist.  Whether you are children, men, women or seniors, Alexandre is always pleased to take the time to accompany his patients, to guide and advise them  in order to make them feel better.
