Ingrown toenails among children

Share

October 17, 2017

Did you know that children also face the risk of suffering from ingrown toenails   ? If your child complains of pain in the big toe area while you can observe redness and swelling, this is probably because his nail is piercing the skin.

What should you do ?

  1. Immediately begin to soak your foot in water and Epsom salt twice a day.

  2. In order to minimize the risk of compounding the problem, make an appointment with your podiatrist to have this piece of your nail trimmed, otherwise it will continue growing.   A recurring problem may require invasive treatments.  To prevent the reappearance of the symptoms, your podiatrist can also teach you proper trimming techniques.

How can we avoid the development of ingrown toenails ?  Make sure your child’s footwear has appropriate length and width.

Foot health starts at a young age; for your children, feel free to contact our team of podiatrists !
