Nail fungus or onychomycosis is a fungal infection difficult to treat. Fungi mostly affect the big toe while causing pain, discoloration, a thicker nail which curls up or breaks more easily or can even let residue under the nail.
These fungi spread in hot and humid places. People who suffer from excessive sweating are more susceptible to this type of infection. Athlete’s foot or mold contamination are also among the main causes of transmission. The risk of developing nail fungus increases for people with weaker immune system, such as seniors or diabetics.
It is difficult to get rid of onychomycosis. Over-the-counter medicines are little or not efficient. A prescription for an oral medication may be necessary . In other cases, your podiatrist will be able to treat directly the affected nail to help control the infection.
One thing you can be sure of is that you need to act quickly because the infection will not disappear on its own ! Consult a healthcare professional upon the first symptoms.
