L’hallux valgus, infamous and known as « bunion », is a bone deviation of the big toe and the first metatarsal that may take the form of an external angular bump. This deformity related to a biomechanical weakness can reach significant proportions and cause pain if nothing is done.
The spectrum of potential interventions is extremely broad, from the purchase of more comfortable shoes to bone surgery, through the prescription of plantar orthotics.
Hereditary factors, the presence of chronic diseases such as arthritis and wearing shoes that are too narrow and compressing the feet are the main development factors of this deviation of the first metatarsal outwards. Menopausal women are often more at risk of developing bunions, due to hormonal changes running their body and accentuating the evolving deviation.
No matter the severity of your bunion, a podiatrist will identify an appropriate treatment to make you smile again !
