The carpal tunnel syndrome, that affects the wrist, is well known for causing serious pain and numbness to those suffering from it. There is a similar disorder related to the foot which is also painful , but rather unknown : the tarsal tunnel syndrome.
In specific terms, the pain may extend from the ankle to the toes, causing a tingling or a burning sensation. It occurs in an upright position or while wearing certain footwear and generally disappear at rest.
This syndrome is caused by an irritation of the tarsal nerve, particularly due to a condition such as flat feet, inflammation (arthritis), injuries or trauma or a poor foot posture.
If you think you may have this syndrome, consult your podiatrist immediately. Appropriate orthotics, corticosteroide injections or …: he will assess the best treatment to relieve the nerve compression in order to reduce the pain. In some cases, our podiatrists will suggest exercises and/or stretching to ease the syndrome.
This condition tends to worsen with time and should be taken seriously !
