The orthotist has a college education and is considered as a technician. He is authorized to design and manufacture orthotics according to a prescription issued by a podiatrist or a doctor. The orthotist cannot prescribe nor evaluate a patient. Though, he can adjust plantar orthotics prior prescribed by a podiatrist.
The podiatrist is a healthcare professional governed by the Professional Code of Quebec. He assesses and treats foot disorders as well as foot diseases. The podiatrist has a university education and a Doctorate of Podiatric Medicine. In Quebec, only podiatrists and doctors can prescribe plantar orthotics following a biomechanical evaluation of the patient. Contrary to an orthotist, the podiatrist can also proceed with manual therapies, minor surgeries, laser treatments, X-rays and ultrasounds.
Did you know that no medical reference is required when making an appointment and/or consult a podiatrist ? As for the dentist or the chiropractor, the podiatrist is a healthcare professional practising in the private sector.
